Here at Mad Mountain Adventure rentals we always preach safety on the trails while operating your snowmobile and/ or ATV rental! The first key to safety on our rental units is to be wearing a helmet at all times while operating the machine. We understand that they may be uncomfortable in the summer heat here in the Black Hills but understand accidents do happen. We like to see our customers come back in one piece and to have enjoyed the time on their outdoor adventure.
Anyone that plans on operating an ATV or snowmobile rental from us should be aware of the hand signals when meeting oncoming traffic on the trail. These hand signals are not only a gesture of courtesy for both groups but they are there for your safety. When meeting an oncoming group of riders you should always let them know the number of ATV or snowmobiles following you with a simple hand signal. Signals are all based on the number you hold up. Say only one ATV is behind you, you should hold up one finger to warn the on coming rider. You should hold up two fingers if two follow you and so on. If there are more than five ATV or snowmobile rentals behind you, you only need to hold up five fingers.
When you are approaching a corner on the trail always be mindful that there may be oncoming machines. Always take time and slow down when coming into a blind corner. Another safety feature we like to point out while operating your summer machine is that although it may be fun to through the big mud puddles we have here near Deadwood. There is always a risk of hydroplaning and rolling your rental unit. Please be careful and travel at safe speeds in these zones!
ITEMS YOU MIGHT WANT TO BRING ON YOUR RIDE
When embarking on your ATV adventure in the Black Hills of South Dakota you may want to plan ahead. You should always be aware of the possible changes in the weather while on your out-door adventure. Things that you should keep in mind for clothing while on your ATV rental may require a small back pack to be brought with. If rain is in the forecast always plan on bringing a long sleeved shirt or better yet a water resistant rain coat. A long sleeve shirt or sweatshirt is always good to have along as the weather up in the hills can be a little more chilly than down in Sturgis or Spearfish. We recommend bringing a pair of gloves as well for this reason.
Although we recommend that you should always wear a helmet when in your UTV rentals some people may choose not to. In that case we think it is beneficial that you wear a hat and or sun glasses to keep the sun out your eyes. Goggles are also highly suggested as you will encounter mud, water, and dust while on the ATV trails.
A few more things we like to bring out on our adventures are food and beverages. It is important to remember that you may be out exploring the trails all day long and might grow hungry or thirsty. Although there are many stops like Recreation Springs, Nemo or Trailshead Lodge to grab a quick bite to eat. Your journey might be a different path where there are no stops to eat resulting in having to pack a lunch. Some easy snacks we like to do are sandwiches, granola bars, or beef jerky to name a few. Always plan on packing water as some days can be extremely hot out on the trails.
One last thing and a very important thing in fact. Always bring a map or have a maps app downloaded on your cellular device. We never like to have our customers lost out in the woods. Trail signs are all posted on the trees along the trails or in certain areas there are small map posters showing you where you are.
ATV RIDING IN SOUTH DAKOTA
One thing awesome about Renting an ATV from Mad Mountain Adventures is that all of our machines are licensed to drive on the road as well as the trails! Not only do you get to enjoy the awesome trail systems that the Black Hills have to offer but you can also take your machine to the surrounding scenic areas here. If you want to take a break during your ride day you can take your machine into Lead, Deadwood, or the surrounding beautiful towns for lunch.
We do have some pointers while operating your ATV rental machine on the road. Always be ware of the proper hand signals while turning and stoping on the road. For instance if you are turning left, stick your left arm straight to the left out of your door. If you are turning to the right, stick your left arm out the window at a ninety degree angle to the sky. Last if you are stopping, put your left arm out the window at a ninety degree angle to the pavement.
Always keep in mind that although you are aboard of a high performance machine the laws still apply to YOU on the road. With that in mind do not drink and drive!!! Always abide by the speed limit and drive like a normal human being! We like our customers to leave our shop having had an amazing time and wanting to come back for more!
